countable nouns

Count nouns are the names of objects which can be counted, such as cows.

We have 3 cows in our farm.

I saw 4 elephants yesterday.

An ox hit my latest model car.

Non-Count nouns are the names of things or substances which cannot be counted, such as water:

I had some water.

When you thirsty, you should drink some water.

Useful Tips

You have to know the difference between count and non-count nouns in order to

  • use articles (the and a/an) correctly
  • use plurals correctly
  • use quantity words or quantifiers (e.g. much or many) correctly

You can easily  recognize countable nouns. They are somethings that we can count. For example: "pencil". We can count pencils. We can have one, two, three or more pencils. Here are some more countable nouns:

  • table, balloon, mountain, dog, cat, animal, man, person
  • telephone,bottle, box, litre
  • computer,coin, note, dollar
  • pencil, cup, plate, fork
  • chair, suitcase, bag

Countable nouns can be singular or plural:

  • My cat is playing.
  • My cats are hungry.

We can use the indefinite article a/an with countable nouns:

  • A cat is an animal.

When a countable noun is singular, we must use a word like a/the/my/this with it:

  • I want an apple. (not I want apple.)
  • Where is my dog? (not Where is dog?)

When a countable noun is plural, we can use it alone:

  • I like apples.
  • Glasses can break.

We can use some and any with countable nouns:

  • I've got some sterlin.
  • Have you got any pencils?

We can use a few and many with countable nouns:

  • I've got a few pounds.
  • I haven't got many pencils.
